Toluca wrote another golden chapter in their storied history by defeating Club América 3–1 to win the 2025 Campeón de Campeones,
The win marks Toluca’s fifth Campeón de Campeones title and their first since the 2005–06 season, reaffirming Los Diablos Rojos' rise back to prominence in Mexican football.
Club América took an early lead in the match with a quick goal from Alejandro Zendejas, following a brilliant play by Brian Rodríguez; however, from the opening whistle, Toluca looked like the more determined and organized side. Their aggressive pressing and tactical discipline paid off late in the first half when Franco Romero levelled the scoring
Later on, Bruno Méndez rose above the América defense to head in the second goal off a perfectly delivered corner kick. That goal gave Toluca momentum and a deserved lead going into the break.
América tried to respond in the second half, showing flashes of attacking urgency, but Toluca’s midfield, led by Claudio Baeza and Marcel Ruiz, remained composed and controlled. The game turned definitively in Toluca’s favor in the 70th minute when Paulinho doubled the lead with a low shot across goal, confirmed by VAR after a brief review. The Brazilian striker was clinical and once again proved to be a vital figure in big moments.
Later on, every hope of America disappeared when Igor Lichnovsky received a red card. The final whistle confirmed Toluca's victory and sparked celebrations among the thousands of fans who made the trip to California.
What is the Campéon de Campeones?
This final brought together the winners of the Apertura 2024 (América) and Clausura 2025 (Toluca), with both teams eyeing the prestigious Super Cup that pits the two seasonal champions against each other. Unlike last year’s tense goalless draw that went to penalties, this match delivered action, goals, and a clear winner.
The win is a statement for head coach Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed, who took charge of Toluca with the goal of restoring the club’s competitive edge. With a mix of experienced international players and rising Mexican talent, his squad has quickly become one of the most balanced and dynamic in Liga MX. Mohamed’s tactical approach neutralized América’s attacking threats and exposed their defensive vulnerabilities.
For América, the defeat was a hard blow, especially coming off an inconsistent preseason with several starters unavailable. Despite their status as the league’s most successful clubs, they struggled to break down Toluca’s disciplined backline, struggling to match the intensity shown by Los Diablos Rojos.
With this triumph, Toluca not only lifts another trophy but also qualifies for the 2025 Campeones Cup, where they will face the MLS Cup champions, LA Galaxy later this year.
The victory caps a remarkable turnaround for the club and sets the tone for the upcoming Apertura 2025. For now, Toluca celebrates being the best of the best in Mexican football.
